Universal Paddle Shifter
APPLICATION: Simplifies the adaptation of our paddle shifter design to ANYTHING with an electronic automatic transmission. Be sure to thoroughly understand all three adaptation steps before proceeding with purchase. Installation complexity varies by application:
1) PADDLE SHIFTER TO STEERING COLUMN ADAPTER: Bolt the paddle shifter to your steering column adapter hub of choice. Designed with a common 3 bolt flange identical to most racing quick release hubs. Also compatible with Grant Products Installation Kits for adaptation of older GM muscle car steering columns such as a 57 Chevy. 66 Mustang, 69 Charger, etc. If Grant makes an installation kit for your application, chances are it will bolt up to our paddle shifter. These adapters fit between the paddle shifter and the steering column. If a 3 bolt adapter hub or quick release hub is not available for your application, you will need to fabricate one. This generally requires advanced machining and/or welding skills.
2) ELECTRONICS: Once you have adapted the paddle shifter to your steering column, you will need to connect the paddle shifter electronics. The ShrifterŽ is a wireless device consisting of a transmitter mounted in the paddle shifter and a receiver which mounts to the vehicle. Connectivity between the receiver and the paddle shifter is by RF signal with 125 millisecond signal transfer time. The wireless design greatly simplifies installation and allows for easy adaptation to your electronic automatic transmission with manumatic capability. If you car is equipped with factory manumatic capability (i.e. +/- on the floor shifter) you can tap into those wires. Our receiver accepts basic 12V, Ground and Common wires, some basic electronics skills may be required to convert your factory wiring signal. Our receiver has screw down posts to simplify the process.
If your car has an electronic transmission, but does not have factory manumatic capability, you will need to adapt an aftermarket transmission controller to get manumatic capability. we offer Compushift controllers for GM and Ford electronic automatics.
3) PADDLE SHIFTER TO STEERING WHEEL ADAPTER: As the ShrifterŽ measures 2.125" deep, it does NOT work with factory steering wheels. A relatively flat, aftermarket steering wheel is required. As such, the ShrifterŽ must NEVER be used in street driven vehicles that came originally equipped with airbag steering wheels. If your vehicle came factory equipped with an airbag, you should only consider the installation of our paddle shifters for racing applications. We make steering wheel adapters to accept aftermarket five bolt and six bolt steering wheels such as Sparco, Momo, and Grant. These adapters fit between the paddle shifter and the steering wheel. Adapters are NOT required for nine bolt billet wheels such as LeCarra, Budnik, Billet Specialties, etc.
